If you're ever in doubt about whether your child needs a sick visit, call our office. Our friendly staff asks a few questions to determine the severity of your child's symptoms, and then help you decide if you need to come into the office.
You can schedule same-day sick visits any time the office is open, which includes every weekday from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM and Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. We also offer extended hours by appointment for urgent needs.
When to call immediately: Don't hesitate to contact us if your child's symptoms worsen or if you're concerned about their condition.
The goal of a sick child visit is to quickly diagnose the problem and start treatment that will help your child feel more comfortable. Dr. Kawali takes time to thoroughly assess your child's condition.
A sick visit may include:
- Review of your child's symptoms and medical history
- Comprehensive physical examination including checking heart, neck, throat, and ears
- Temperature and vital signs assessment
- Blood tests if necessary
- Urine test when indicated
- Rapid strep test or other diagnostic tests as needed
- Treatment plan discussion and medication prescriptions
- Follow-up care instructions
Dr. Kawali will also provide guidance on home care and when to return if symptoms persist or worsen.
Sick visits treat many types of injuries and illnesses that need same-day or next-day medical care. Children's symptoms can change quickly, so don't hesitate to call if your child's symptoms get worse.
The most common conditions treated during sick visits include:
- Upper respiratory infections and colds
- Influenza (flu)
- Ear infections and earaches
- Sore throat and strep throat
- Fever and febrile illnesses
- Coughs and congestion
- Stomach pain and abdominal discomfort
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Asthma exacerbations
- Skin rashes, hives, and allergic reactions
- Eye infections and discharge (conjunctivitis/pink eye)
- Minor cuts, scrapes, and injuries
- Urinary tract infections
- Viral infections and childhood illnesses
We also provide care for behavioral concerns that may arise during illness and guidance for managing symptoms at home.
While all the conditions often treated during a sick visit have the potential to need immediate care, some symptoms are red flags that your child needs quick medical attention.
Call us immediately for the following symptoms:
- Fever of 100.4ºF (38°C) or higher in infants under 3 months old
- Fever of 102ºF (38.9°C) or higher plus other symptoms in children over 3 months old
- Fever that lasts longer than three days
- Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
- Persistent or severe pain
- Signs of dehydration (no wet diapers, dry mouth, no tears when crying)
- Widespread rash, especially with fever
- Unusual symptoms lasting more than three days
- Vomiting that prevents keeping fluids down
- Signs of severe illness (lethargy, difficulty waking, severe irritability)
Symptoms with fever that may signal a serious problem include:
- Stiff neck
- Severe headache
- Persistent vomiting
- Rash that doesn't fade when pressed
- Difficulty breathing
- Extreme drowsiness or difficulty arousing
