Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. People with ASD often have challenges with social communication and interaction, and may display restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. They may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention.

Key Facts About Autism

  • Prevalence: About 1 in 31 U.S. children (3.2%) are identified as autistic by age 8
  • Gender Differences: Boys are identified as autistic more than 3 times more often than girls
  • Early Identification: The sooner autism is identified, the sooner families can access early supports and services
  • Screening Recommendations: All children should be screened for autism at their 18- and 24-month well-child checkups
  • Individual Differences: Each child on the autism spectrum has different needs and strengths

While the exact causes of autism are not fully understood, research shows that genetics and environmental factors both play a role. Important to know: Decades of rigorous research have shown that vaccines do not cause autism.
