🧠 Behavioral Health

Comprehensive support for challenging behavior, attention concerns, anxiety, and depression

Behavioral Health encompasses many components that contribute to overall health and well-being. The process for diagnosing behavioral health concerns may begin with your child's primary pediatrician and often requires additional care by specialists in the community.

We welcome the opportunity to assist your family in evaluating common behavioral concerns such as challenging behavior in toddlers and children, academic concerns, attention and concentration concerns, and mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Behavioral Health Evaluation

Please start the evaluation by scheduling an appointment with Dr. Priyanka Kawali, MD to discuss behavioral health concerns. Identifying and treating these conditions will require several appointments, ongoing follow-up, and potentially a referral to a specialist.

The evaluation process includes:

  • Initial consultation with your pediatrician
  • Comprehensive assessment using standardized screening tools
  • Family and school input gathering
  • Multiple follow-up appointments for monitoring
  • Specialist referrals when needed
  • Coordination with schools for accommodations

Behavioral Health Medications

If your child is prescribed medication for behavioral health, it will be especially important to follow up with the same provider for medication refills. Specific appointment monitoring requirements will vary depending on the type of medication and your child's diagnosis.

All patients on long-term medications must be seen in person for an annual Well Child Check-up.

⚠️ Crisis Management & Immediate Resources

We know that children and teens may experience anxiety, depression, attention, academic and sleep concerns. An appointment with your pediatrician is appropriate for new or chronic concerns.

If experiencing a crisis:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline - Call or text 988 (24/7)
  • Crisis Text Line - Text "HELLO" to 741741
  • Emergency Room - For life-threatening medical emergencies

Finding Mental Health Support

Research has shown that mental health therapy can be the first line of treatment for many issues. We recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) - evidence-based help and skill training for depression and anxiety in children and teens.

Ways to Find a Therapist:

  • Contact your insurance company for in-network providers
  • Search Psychology Today and filter by insurance, location, child/teen, CBT/IPT
  • Washington's Mental Health Referral Service: (833) 303-5437 (Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm)
  • Contact your Employee Assistance Program

Finding a therapist can take time, so it's often a good idea to start the process early.
